Algebraic Order of Operations 11-7-11 to 11-11-11
Tuesday, November 8, 2011
We are still working on learning the order of operations. This week we will be adding decimals to the mix as well as using variables. The variables will be known as the problem will indicate how much the variable is worth. Students will just has to plug in the value in the place of the variable spot.
EXAMPLES
What is the value of the expression below when S= 3/4
4(S + 8)
What is the value of the expression, when r= 6
r x ( 2 4/5 + 4 1/5) - 2/3

Numerical Order of Operations 10-31-11 to 11-3-11

*Newest learned operations to oldest learned operations
1) Parenthesis ( )
2) Exponents
3) X (multiplication) or / (division) *1st Come 1st Served*
4) + or - * 1st come 1st served
In the future they will have to add additional operations to their order such as square roots. Therefore, I have stressed that the order of operations runs from newly learned skills to oldest skills learned rather than teach PEMDAS or PleaseExcuseMyDearAuntSally which can confuse kids on the proper order.
Please look under 2nd 9 weeks order of operations!

About Me
- Mrs. Burger
- My name is Mrs. Hanah Burger. This is my 4th year teaching 5th grade math at Blythe-Bower Elementary, and I love what I do. My goal is to make as many math nerds out there to love numbers and change the world with their knowledge! I just finished my Masters, and I hope to one day go back for my EDs. I have two amazing kiddos, Mikaela (6) and Peyton (3), as well as a great hubby, Jonathan. They mean the world to me. :0D
