Mathbook Bulletin Board

Sunday, September 23, 2012

My 5th graders have been working so hard for me so I wanted  them to show off what they were learning. I decided I wanted my bulletin board in the hallway to put to good regular use. I've never known exactly what to do with it. I decided to make a play on the Facebook bulletin boards I've seen on Pinterest.

How did I do it?
I made a "Mathbook" bulletin board. I used poster board and hand drew the symbols in black sharpie. Then I used regular copy paper to cut out the letters trying to match a facebook-ish font. Then I took card stock and cut them at 8 1/2 inches a piece. I had some volunteers cut and laminate them for me. (Thank you BB volunteers!!) I also copied the Facebook Like symbol with the word Like next to it on blue paper. These were also laminated.

How exactly do I use it?
Students can pick a new spot every week. I figured this would be better than assigning a spot. That way every student dependent on their height preference could pick a spot on the board. Students write down what they learned that week, show an example problem, brag about their test score, and etc. If I like what they say then I use a "Like button" simply by stapling it with one staple. It's easy to take off the next week. Students use the card stocks to write on with black dry erase markers. I have found color doesn't erase as well. Then students can erase a card and rewrite it on the next week after their test. It's a great way to show off what we did that week as well as an awesome use for an exit slip.

Signing off, Mrs. Burger :-)
